Commentary:
January was a really unusual month in terms of classics. So many different songs from a variety of genres are all over the chart. Cher's "The Power" from her 1998 Believe album tops the chart in the form of an unreleased Junior Vasquez mix that unexpectedly surfaced in the early weeks of the year. Nancy Martinez's Hi Nrg/Freestyle smash "Can't Wait" is always flirting with the top of the chart as it is a regular favorite since entering rotation in February of 2012. The KTU exclusive George Calle & Mauro DeSantis mix of Brandy's "Have You Ever" is another one that re-entered rotation recently. Armand Van Helden's sexy "Entra Mi Casa" and Airscape's instrumental Trance epic "L'Esperanza" never leave the monthly classics rotation for too long as those are some of my all time favorites. The rare Full Intention remix of Teena Marie's post-Disco/R&B chesnut "I Need Your Lovin" was a favorite of mine during that month as I was working on a re-edit of it for my Valentine's/Love Ball/Red Party podcast. The Bone Thugs N' Harmony track may stick out like a sore thumb amongst all the songs on the chart, but that song was a major local hit in this slightly remixed version. The unreleased Donna Summer song "Valley Of The Moon" that surfaced recently has been in medium rotation lately. Sade's "Paradise" is in the final position on the chart, though the rest of their The Best Of Sade was all tied for that position as I listened to he album during the month.

Commentary:
The lead single from OneRepublic's Native tops the chart with a considerable lead over the other songs. It actually has more spins than the rest of the top 10 combined based on both the original version and the Delerium mashup. The 3rd single from Lotus, "Let There Be Love" charted so high on the strength of the remixes that were promoted for a club release. Asher Monroe, a former member of short-lived boyband V Factory (of "Love Struck" fame) charts with his first proper solo single that was released last year, but the remixes were serviced a little over a month ago. A major record has been set this month as all 10 songs from the standard edition of the Justin Timberlake album The 20/20 Experience are somewhere on the chart, with "Blue Ocean Floor" debuting very high. Some other interesting debuts include Depeche Mode's second single "Soothe My Soul", Leah LaBelle's "Lolita", Guinevere's "Fly Away", and Deborah Cox's "Higher".

Commentary:

After a few years away, Depeche Mode top the chart this month with the lead single from Delta Machine. Dance diva Suzanne Palmer returns to the chart with Gospel-drenched "Joy" after a number of years of flirting with just the lower part of the chart. Rihanna's "Stay" has also made it pretty far just as "Diamonds" did in the latter part of last year. German star Sandra's "Stay In Touch" remains steady on the chart despite having been there for many months now. The new 2013 remix of Janet Jackson's "Throb" causes her to finally return to the chart after not having a single entry in ages. Emeli Sande begins her ascent on this month's chart with the gorgeous "Next To Me." There was higher turnover on this chart as there was an influx of so many great new songs and the classics themes during the month were centered around Jim Heinz's 2000-2007 work with Jonathan Peters.

Commentary:
Justin Timberlake's lead single from his upcoming The 20/20 Experience album tops the chart with just a few days of spins. It made quite an impression as he has been away from the music scene for far too long. A bunch of Bollywood film songs are on the chart too because they were all over the Indian radio station and at 'Desi parties'. They make you want to dance like a ho. There are also a number of entries from Macklemore & Ryan Lewis and Christina Aguilera's respective albums which were released recently as there were really slim pickings in terms of current music and those were some of the best records at the time. A number of classics/retro themes were done so many of the current songs could not be played as much during those weeks.

Chart Methodology

All of the data for the charts is sourced from my Last.FM plays. The monthly charts are calculated using the weekly snapshots and then the 'classics' are removed. After adding all the plays up, the 30 songs with the most plays will be in the chart for that month. All songs outside of the top 30 will be added and totaled at the end of the year for the year-end chart.
